Much is said and written about love. Poets compose romantic poems. Prosaists pen down exuberant masterpieces. Novelists spin magical webs with words that go on to be bestsellers. Movie makers direct and produce superhit action movies, comedies, dramas, fantasies centered around love. Painters portray love sagas on their canvas with artistic finesse. Music composers give out captivating numbers expressing the various moods in love. Philosophers categorize love into various types. The hearts of teens spark at the mention of the word ‘love’, while older adults coyly giggle in visible embarrassment when talking about love.

It is love that rules the world.

Does it truly?

When God created the world, He infused His Spirit into man. And, so man became a living being. Genesis 2:7 says –

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

Further, 1 John 4:8 says –

“God is love”

In breathing the breath of life into Adam, God breathed love into man – the pure pristine wholesome love for the Creator and towards creation. You see, Adam was not a living being till God breathed the breath of life into him. He was a mere sculpture made of dust by the Great Sculptor.

Today we marvel at the artistic expertise of some of the famous sculptors of the world. Sand sculptures in particular, enthrall me. However, even the creative genius of all the sculptors of the world pooled together cannot accomplish the feat of giving life to the sculptures. Giving life is the domain reserved for God alone.

I wonder how Adam would have loved God, Eve and the creation before the Fall! How his expression of that pure love would have been! The Fall diluted the very nature of man and hence besmirched the understanding of love in humans. Love, as we see, hear, read and understand today is not the same love that God’s Spirit imparted unto man. No doubt we get to hear of murders, adultery, fornication, deception, kidnapping – all supposedly in the name of love!! A heart of sin can never understand the all-encompassing nature of love.

Amidst such a bleak picture, the good news of hope is that God’s love remains unchangeable. Today, God loves man with the same love with which He loved Adam – the first created human. What a blessing! He has not dealt with us as our sins deserve.

“He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” Psalm 103:10

“As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:12

Though tarnished by sin, man can still tap into the unlimited reservoir of God’s love. God promises to cleanse the sticky tar that has deposited on our souls by virtue of our sins.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Once our unrighteousness is replaced by the righteousness of Jesus Christ, His Spirit is once again infused into us. Love is once again breathed into us!

No matter what is said, written, sung or enacted about love, no man can have the true understanding of love without knowing God. The love that men speak of is nothing but the diluted traces of the undiluted love that was once infused into man.

To claim to know love well enough and to be rigid in not wanting to know God prevents the free inflow of His Spirit into us. This is nothing but making way for the suicide of the soul!

The human soul yearns for the love of the Maker. That love alone is the balm that heals the suffering of the soul.

Do you feel unloved? Know for sure that no love that any relationship can offer is complete enough to satiate your innate desire for love.

Love finds expression in the person of Jesus Christ. To know Him, is to know love in it’s entirety!

My Prayer for us: Lord, I thank You for breathing Your love into me. I pray that many others would open their hearts to allow Your love to fill and heal them. Help us to be torchbearers of Your love. Amen.

  1. This is such a beautiful article, Rajnandini… I loved those Bible verses which you quoted that declared God’s love so loud and clear which He showered upon us from the beginning of the creation till now… And the last prayer which you made to the Almighty is so so earnest.

Thanks for such a powerful article.
